An hypothetycal evolutionary lineage of the Mauritius Dodo Raphus cucullatus (bottom) and Rodriguez Solitaire Pezophaps solitaria (top). I always imagined the transition between the ancestor, an African Pigeon, to the final stage of these large doves. Did the family is polyfiltetic? Raphus solitarius isn't included, since it was in fact an ibis.

Actually, the Nicobar Pigeon of Southeast Asia and Papua New Guinea is presumed to be the ancestor of the Dodo and Solitaire, after comparing mitochondrial DNA from remains.
Still, the Nicobar is a pretty big pigeon, being about 40 cm long.
